NBA Live hasn't been very good in years. That has indirectly led to the delay of the next version of the game until 2017. Consumers and critics loved the NBA Street franchise, but the last version was released in 2007. It was called NBA Street Homecourt and it was one of those games you binged on as a kid.

While the previously mentioned details would sustain the old-school draw, there would need to be a new-school feature to grab the attention of today's virtual street ballers. What if you could play NBA Street the same way gamers play MyPark in NBA 2K.

Homecourt almost totally succeeds. Earlier games still had a hint of arcade brashness but this latest is laid all the way back: scruffy courts on late afternoons, a superlative soundtrack of deep funk and educated hip-hop, menus done on a typewriter and a laconic voiceover spinning lazy lines about life on the street. It looks great and sounds better, with some of the most naturalistic court chatter you'll ever hear. Some of the grainy visual filters are overdone, and the sentimental homeboy philosophising of the theme is taken a bit too seriously, but they're tiny slip-ups, all told.

NBA Street Homecourt is a great game for both non-sports fans and basketball lovers alike. By fusing the stylish and fierce atmosphere of street basketball with a great roster of real athletes, this casual sports game offers a great balance between fantasy and reality. Although most of the game modes feel similar and occasionally repetitive, the core gameplay never becomes boring, resulting in continuously fun and exciting basketball action.

If you've played either of the PS2 titles, you'll already be familiar with the basics. The general flow of the game is very much the same as it was a few years ago: three ballers of your choice battling for supremacy on the city streets with no real rules.
